You've seen sellers list packs as "heavy," "light," or "unweighed." We've compiled years of knowledge and collaboration in this page, which explains how vintage packs are weighed, what the numbers signal, and how we classify every single pack we sell.
In the modern TCG, weighing doesn't work — code cards and variable stock were added specifically to prevent it. Vintage packs tell a different story. In the WOTC era (1999–2003), holographic cards are physically heavier than non-holos, and that foil adds real, measurable weight — sometimes as little as 0.2–0.4g, but enough to detect on a precision scale.
So a pack containing a holo rare consistently weighs more than one without. Not a guarantee — a meaningful signal about what's inside a pack that hasn't been touched since the late '90s.
Every loose booster pack we sell goes through our weight-inspection process and is sorted into one of four categories.

Each figure is the typical (median) weight; the smaller range shows where the middle 80% of confirmed packs fall. Light and heavy distributions overlap — a heavier pack leans holo, but nothing here is a guarantee.

Sample sizes vary by set; the distributions overlap and no single weight guarantees a pull.

From the EX era (2003) onward, weighing becomes more unpredictable. The same product can swing by nearly two grams between print runs — anywhere from roughly 15g to 17g — so a scale reading tells you very little. It's not one problem but several stacked on top of each other:
Because of this, identifying a heavy EX-era pack by scale alone is highly inaccurate. The only real way to know would be weighing a full booster box of 36 packs, and even in these, the margin for error is higher than WOTC. We therefore rarely publish weight ranges for these sets, and we don't weight-classify them — anyone quoting exact "heavy" gram cutoffs for EX-era and newer packs is overstating what the data supports.
This helps us classify every pack unsearched, light, middle or heavy.
We never manipulate results. All packs sold here are authenticated. This policy actually covers every item — if a pack we listed as heavy doesn't pull a holo, we want to hear from you.
Every loose pack is inspected. Packs inside sealed blisters or booster boxes aren't individually weighed — the factory seal guarantees they've never been tampered with.
Any digital scale reading to 0.01g — a jewellery or pocket scale is plenty. Avoid 0.1g scales: the gap between a light and heavy pack is often just 0.2–0.3g.
Not always — resealed packs are a real problem in the vintage market. Some people are even scanning packs with CT medical-grade scanners... Buy from sellers with verified authenticity guarantees and returns. Ours is money-back for exactly this reason.
Absolutely. They give you the original factory experience — the same odds someone got in 1999. For many collectors, that's the entire point.
